WordPress + eCab vs Off-the-Shelf Chauffeur Apps: Which One Do You Actually Own?
Quick question for you. Do you actually own your booking system, or are you just renting it?
I ask because most operators never really think about it until something goes wrong. The platform hikes its prices, or drops a feature you relied on, or gets bought out and suddenly everything looks different. And that’s when it hits you: this thing you’ve built your whole business around isn’t really yours. You’re a tenant, not an owner.
Doesn’t mean that’s a bad way to run things. Plenty of operators do fine on rented platforms. But you should go in with your eyes open, so let’s actually talk through it.
What I mean by "off-the-shelf"
I’m talking about the hosted, pay-monthly booking apps built for taxi and chauffeur firms. You sign up, you pay your fee, your booking system lives on their servers.
I’m not here to trash any specific one of these, some are genuinely decent products. This isn’t a “SaaS bad, WordPress good” pitch. It’s just that the two models work really differently once your business starts growing, and it’s worth knowing that before you commit years of your business to one or the other.
What "ownership" actually means here
When people say “do I own this,” they’re usually really asking four things:
If the platform vanished tomorrow, would you have anything left, or would you be starting completely from scratch?
Can you get your customer and booking data out whenever you want, or is it stuck inside someone else’s dashboard forever?
Does your booking page actually look like your business, or does it look like the twenty other operators using the same template?
And if you ever decide to leave, can you walk away clean, or does it cost you your history and your customers on the way out?
Hold onto those four questions. Everything below comes back to them.
Fair play to the off-the-shelf apps though
Let’s give credit where it’s due first.
They’re fast. You can be live in a day. There’s no build cost, no waiting around. The vendor deals with hosting and updates and security so you don’t have to think about any of it. Honestly, if you’re a single driver just trying to get your first bookings in, this is a perfectly sensible place to start.
Where it starts to bite is later on.
Those monthly fees never stop. Add them up over three or four years and you’ve often paid more than a custom build would’ve cost you outright, and at the end of it you own nothing.
You’re also stuck with whatever the platform lets you do. Want a quote form that works differently for airport runs, or a proper fleet booking flow? If it’s not a setting they’ve already built, tough luck. You’re waiting on their roadmap, and it might never happen.
And your data lives in their world, not yours. Try moving providers one day and you’ll find out just how hard it is to get your own customer list out cleanly.
Then there’s the bit nobody talks about until it happens: they can change the deal on you whenever they like. Price goes up, a feature disappears, they get bought by someone else. You’ve got no say in any of it.
Chauffeur Booking System for UK Companies
Bookings become easier to manage, payments are handled automatically and your whole process feels more professional from start to finish.
Full disclosure, this is what we build, so take that as you like. But here’s the honest difference.
It’s self-hosted, on your own domain. That’s your website, on your hosting, under your name. Nobody can pull the rug out.
Your data is actually yours. Bookings, customers, all of it sits in your own database. Export it, back it up, do whatever you want with it.
The design is genuinely yours too. We build on WordPress with Elementor and layer custom CSS on top, so your site looks like your business rather than a template with your logo slapped on.
And because we control the code, we can actually build the weird specific thing you need. A custom pricing rule, a fleet-only path through the booking flow, whatever it is. Off-the-shelf platforms just can’t do that.
You pay once to build it, not forever to rent it. There’s still hosting and upkeep, I’m not going to pretend there isn’t, but you’re not chained to a subscription just to keep your own site alive.
But let's be straight, it asks more of you upfront
This isn’t the “no downside” option either.
It takes longer to get going than signing up for an app. You’re not live by tomorrow afternoon. And because it’s a proper build, you’ll want a developer or agency in your corner for changes, rather than just flipping a toggle yourself.
So it’s not that one has costs and the other doesn’t. It’s just a different shape of cost. You’re trading a bit of convenience now for a lot more control later.
Side by side, if you want it simple
| Off-the-shelf apps | WordPress + eCab | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Monthly, forever | One build, plus hosting |
| Your data | Sits with the vendor | Sits with you |
| Customisation | Whatever they’ve built | Whatever you need |
| Look and feel | Templated | Actually yours |
| Growing with you | Limited by their roadmap | Built around your business |
| Getting locked in | Real risk | Not really |
| When it breaks | You wait on their support | You call your developer |

So which one's actually right for you
If you’re just starting out with one car and you want to be live tomorrow with zero fuss, an off-the-shelf app is a totally reasonable call. Get the bookings flowing, worry about the rest later. No judgement there.
But if you’ve already got a fleet, or you’re growing one, and you’re tired of your booking flow not quite matching how your business actually works, or you just don’t fancy being at the mercy of some app’s pricing team in five years’ time, then WordPress and eCab gets you something the other option never really can. Something that’s genuinely yours.
Take a look at how this worked out for a Cardiff chauffeur firm we built for to see it in practice.
Bottom Line From Petr - Myself
I’m not trying to convince you every operator needs a fully custom build on day one. I just want you to actually know what you’re trading away when you pick convenience over ownership, so it’s a choice you’re making on purpose, not one you just fell into.
If you like the sound of a booking system built around how you actually work, rather than the other way round, give us a shout and we’ll have a chat about what that’d look like for you.
