Custom chauffeur website vs website builder: what operators actually need
If you’re running a chauffeur or private hire business and you’ve started looking into a new website, you’ve probably landed on the same fork in the road most operators do. Do you go with something like Wix or Squarespace and get it done this weekend, or do you get a proper custom site built and wait a bit longer for it?
There’s no universally right answer here. It depends on how you take bookings, how big your fleet is, and how much you actually want to be logging into a website admin panel six months from now. Let’s get into what actually separates the two, not just in theory but for operators specifically.
We’ve gone deeper on Wix and the other DIY tools in our guide to building a business website yourself.
So what's the actual difference between a website builder and a custom build
A website builder like Wix or Squarespace gives you a drag and drop editor, a set of templates, and hosting all bundled together. You pick a theme, swap in your logo and photos, and you’re live. It’s genuinely quite good at what it’s built for.
A custom build, in our case WordPress with the eCab plugin and CSS tailored to your brand, starts from a blank page. Nothing’s pre-decided for you. That means more decisions up front and a longer build time, but it also means the site does exactly what you need rather than what the template allows.
Neither of these is inherently better. They’re built for different jobs.
Where Wix or Squarespace genuinely hold up fine
If you’re a sole operator or a small fleet with two or three cars, and most of your bookings come from phone calls or WhatsApp rather than the website itself, a builder can do everything you need. You get a page that explains your services, shows your vehicles, and gives people your number. Job done.
They’re also genuinely fast to set up, cheap on a monthly basis, and you don’t need a developer on speed dial to fix a typo. If your website is basically a digital business card, that’s a perfectly sensible way to spend your money.
Where they start to creak for chauffeur and private hire operators
The cracks tend to show up once your business needs the website to actually do something, rather than just describe what you do.
Website builders are built around generic use cases: restaurants, freelancers, small shops. Chauffeur and private hire work has its own quirks. Fixed pricing by route or postcode, airport transfers with flight tracking, hourly hire, account clients who need a different journey entirely to a one-off wedding booking. Squeezing that into a template built for booking a hair appointment gets awkward fast.
You’ll also hit limits on things like custom fields, third-party integrations, and page speed as the site grows. Builders are optimised to be easy, not to be flexible, and those two things trade off against each other more than the marketing suggests.
Chauffeur Booking System for UK Companies
Bookings become easier to manage, payments are handled automatically and your whole process feels more professional from start to finish.
This is usually where it actually bites. Most website builders either don’t support proper quote and booking functionality for private hire, or they force you into a generic third-party booking widget that looks bolted on and doesn’t talk to anything else in your business.
If you want a booking flow that quotes based on distance and vehicle type, handles airport meet and greet differently to a standard transfer, and feeds clean data into whatever you use for dispatch or invoicing, that’s a genuinely different piece of engineering to a builder’s “pick a date” form. It’s not that the builders are bad, it’s that this isn’t the problem they were designed to solve.
What a custom WordPress build gets you instead
With WordPress and a plugin like eCab, you get a proper quoting engine built around how chauffeur pricing actually works, distance-based fares, vehicle class pricing, airport and postcode rules, all of it configurable rather than hacked together.
You also get full control over the design rather than working inside someone else’s template constraints, and the flexibility to add whatever you need later. Account portals for corporate clients, integrations with your CRM or accounting software, custom quote logic for weddings or events. None of that is a stretch when the whole site is built to be extended.
And because it’s WordPress, you’re not locked into one company’s platform. If you ever want to move hosts, change developers, or make changes yourself down the line, the door’s open. With most builders, your site and your subscription are the same thing. Cancel one, lose the other.

Full disclosure, and the trade-offs of going custom
| What matters | Website builder | Custom WordPress build |
|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | Days | Weeks |
| Upfront cost | £0 to £50 | £2,000 to £6,000 (illustrative) |
| Monthly cost | £15 to £35 | £40 to £90 (hosting and maintenance) |
| Fare and vehicle class logic | Not built for it | Built around it (eCab) |
| Account client portals | Not really possible | Can be added later |
| Making changes later | DIY drag and drop | Usually needs a developer |
| Platform lock-in | Tied to that builder’s subscription | You own the site outright |
| Best fit | Small fleet, simple offer | Bookings drive real revenue |
Full disclosure, this is what we build, so take that as you like. But it’s only fair to be straight about the downsides too, because there are real ones.
A custom build takes longer. You’re looking at weeks rather than a weekend, because there’s design, development, and testing involved rather than picking a template. It also costs more upfront. You’re paying for the engineering, not just a subscription.
And you’re not doing this entirely on your own. Making changes down the line usually means having a developer relationship, whether that’s us or someone else, rather than just logging in and dragging a box around. If you want total DIY control with zero dependency on anyone else, that’s a genuine trade-off worth thinking about honestly.

What it actually costs, roughly
These are illustrative UK figures to give you a sense of scale, not a quote, actual costs vary a lot depending on scope.
A website builder plan typically runs somewhere in the £15 to £35 a month range, with no real setup cost beyond your own time. A custom WordPress build with a proper booking system tends to start somewhere around £2,000 to £6,000 upfront, depending on complexity, plus ongoing hosting and maintenance that’s usually a fair bit less than the build cost annualised.
The gap looks big at first glance. Whether it’s worth it comes down to how much of your business actually runs through that booking flow.

So which one's right for you
If you’re small, your bookings mostly happen off the website, and you want something live this week for not much money, a builder is a sensible, honest choice. There’s no shame in that and we wouldn’t tell you otherwise.
If bookings and quotes are a real part of how you operate, if you’ve got different vehicle classes, account clients, or pricing that doesn’t fit a generic form, a custom build earns its cost back by actually fitting the way you work rather than forcing you to fit it.
